What Is EPG in IPTV? The TV Guide Explained (and How to Fix It)

If you have just set up IPTV, the EPG is probably the first thing that confused you. The channels play, but the guide says “No information”, or it shows a programme that finished two hours ago, or it worked yesterday and is empty today. None of that means the service is broken. It means the guide — which is a separate thing from the streams — has not loaded, is out of date or is set to the wrong time.

This guide explains what EPG is in IPTV, where it comes from, how your app gets it, and how to fix every common guide problem in a couple of minutes.

Quick takeaways

  • EPG = Electronic Program Guide: the TV schedule inside your IPTV app.
  • It comes from a separate file (usually XMLTV), not from the video streams. Channels can play perfectly while the guide is empty.
  • With an Xtream Codes login the guide loads automatically. With an M3U link you may need to add the EPG URL yourself.
  • “No information” = not loaded or not matched. Wrong times = time zone or EPG time shift.
  • Set the app to update the EPG automatically, and the guide will not run dry.

What EPG means in IPTV

EPG stands for Electronic Program Guide. On cable or satellite it is the guide button on the remote. In IPTV it is the same idea: a grid or list showing what is on each channel now, what is on next, and usually the schedule for the coming days, with titles and short descriptions.

The important difference is where it comes from. On cable, the guide travels with the signal. In IPTV, the video streams and the guide are delivered separately. Your app downloads the channel list and streams from one address and the guide from another, then matches the two together. When people say “my EPG is not working”, it is almost always that second download or that matching step that has gone wrong — not the channels.

How the guide gets into your app

The EPG file

Most IPTV guides use a format called XMLTV: a large text file listing every channel’s programmes with start and end times. On Xtream-based services, the address of that file looks like this:

http://server:port/xmltv.php?username=YOUR_USERNAME&password=YOUR_PASSWORD

It uses the same server, username and password as your login. It is the guide’s equivalent of the M3U playlist link, which we break down in IPTV M3U playlist URL explained.

How channels are matched to the guide

Each channel in your playlist carries an ID (in M3U files it is the tvg-id tag). Each channel in the guide file carries one too. The app pairs them up. If a channel’s ID has no partner in the guide, that channel shows “No information” even though the rest of the guide is fine.

Xtream Codes vs M3U

  • Xtream Codes login (username, password, server URL): the app knows where the guide lives and fetches it automatically. This is the setup we recommend on every device that supports it.
  • M3U playlist link: some apps can find the guide from the playlist, others need the EPG URL added in a separate field. If your guide is empty on an M3U setup, this is the first thing to check.

Common EPG problems and how to fix them

Symptom Cause Fix
Whole guide says “No information” Guide not downloaded yet Reload / refresh EPG, wait a minute
Some channels have no guide No matching guide data for those channels Normal for some channels; report the ones you need
Programmes are 1–2 hours out Time zone or EPG time shift Automatic date/time on device, then adjust time shift
Guide worked, now empty Guide expired and was not re-downloaded Turn on automatic EPG updates
Guide never loads on an M3U setup EPG URL missing Add the xmltv.php URL, or switch to Xtream login
Guide takes ages, app freezes Very large guide file on a weak device Load fewer days, clear cache, restart the app

“No information” on every channel

The guide has not been downloaded, or the download failed. Use the app’s reload option — in IPTV Smarters Pro there is a refresh/reload button on the Live TV screen and an EPG option in Settings — and give it a minute; the guide file is large. If it still will not load, log out and back in with the Xtream Codes details so the app rebuilds both the channel list and the guide.

“No information” on a few channels only

Those channels have no matching schedule in the guide file. Some channels — event channels, pop-up sports feeds, small local stations — often have no guide data at all. If a channel you watch regularly is missing its guide, tell support which channel; matches can sometimes be fixed at the provider’s end.

The guide shows the wrong times

First set your device to automatic date and time with the correct time zone. A Firestick or TV box that thinks it is in a different time zone shifts the whole guide. If the guide is still out by a fixed number of hours, use the app’s EPG time shift setting (Smarters and TiviMate both have one) and move it by that many hours.

The guide empties after a day or two

The guide file only covers a limited window, often up to seven days, and your app needs to download it again before it runs out. Turn on automatic EPG updates at start-up, or every 12–24 hours. In Smarters this sits with the automation settings; in TiviMate it is under the EPG settings for each playlist.

Setting up the EPG in popular apps

  • IPTV Smarters Pro: log in with Xtream Codes and the guide downloads on its own. Use reload on the Live TV screen if it is empty, and the EPG time shift in Settings if it is out. Full setup in our Smarters Pro guide.
  • TiviMate: add the playlist with Xtream Codes and the EPG source is filled in for you. On an M3U playlist, add the xmltv.php address under the EPG sources, then set the update interval.
  • Samsung and LG Smart TV apps: the guide arrives with the playlist on most apps once the MAC address is activated. See how to install IPTV on a Smart TV.
  • MAG boxes: the guide comes through the portal automatically; there is nothing to add. If it is empty, reboot the box and reload the portal — covered in the MAG box setup guide.
  • VLC and simple players: many have no guide at all. They are fine for testing a stream, not for everyday viewing.

EPG and catch-up: why the guide matters more than you think

On channels that support catch-up, you replay a programme that has already aired by picking it from the guide — the guide is the menu for the archive. If the EPG is missing or shifted, catch-up becomes guesswork even though the recordings are on the server. The same goes for reminders and recordings in apps that offer them. Fixing the guide is not cosmetic; it unlocks half the features of a good IPTV app.

Make the guide work for you

  • Build a favourites list. A guide of 100,000 channels is unreadable; a guide of your thirty favourites is a proper TV guide.
  • Hide categories you never watch. Most apps let you hide groups, which also makes the guide load faster on slower devices.
  • Use the search. Searching the guide for a team or a show finds the right channel faster than scrolling.
  • Clear the cache on low-storage devices every few weeks so large guide files do not slow the app down.

The IPPLAYTV guide covers up to seven days on supported channels and loads with your Xtream Codes login — nothing extra to configure. You can check the guide for yourself, along with the channels you care about, during the 24-hour free trial.

Frequently asked questions

EPG stands for Electronic Program Guide. It is the TV guide inside your IPTV app: the schedule of what is on each channel now and next, usually for the coming week, with programme titles and descriptions.

Either the guide has not been downloaded yet, or that channel has no guide data matched to it. Reload the EPG from the app’s settings and wait a minute. If only a few channels show it, those channels simply have no schedule in the guide file; that is normal for some smaller or event channels.

Your device’s time zone does not match the guide, or the app’s EPG time shift is set wrong. Set the device to automatic date and time first, then adjust the EPG time shift in the app by the number of hours the guide is out.

On Xtream-based services it is usually http://server:port/xmltv.php?username=YOUR_USERNAME&password=YOUR_PASSWORD. Apps that log in with Xtream Codes fetch it automatically; you only need to enter it by hand in apps that use an M3U playlist.

Not if you log in with Xtream Codes — Smarters downloads the guide automatically. If you logged in with an M3U link, the guide may need the EPG URL added separately, or you can switch to the Xtream login, which is the better option anyway.

Most providers refresh the guide file daily. Your app decides when to download it again: set automatic EPG updates on start-up or every 12–24 hours so the guide never runs out.

The IPPLAYTV guide covers up to 7 days ahead on supported channels, and it loads automatically when you log in with the Xtream Codes details we send you.

Yes. Catch-up lets you replay programmes that have already aired, and you pick them from the guide. If the EPG is missing or shifted, catch-up becomes hard to use even when the recordings are there.
